Show a little pride
This Fourth of July marks the 230th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It also marks 180 years since the deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, on the same July 4, 1826. The 2nd and 3rd presidents were once the best of friends but later became bitter political rivals. In their golden years they reconciled; their written correspondence contains some of the most eloquent and inspiring letters ever written about American values. We can still learn much from them today.
When I saw people jumping from the Twin Towers on 9/11, I didn’t consider whether they were Democrats or Republicans, gay or straight, black, white or otherwise. They were Americans, my countrymen, and it was painful. Remember the wave of patriotism that swept over us all?
This July 4th let’s all be unhyphenated Americans. Forget “Bush Lied” from the left and the election year amendment charades from the right. The ordinary American today lives the most free, prosperous, and leisured lifestyle of any human in recorded history. In our utopian pursuit for global perfection, let’s not take for granted what the Founders left in our trust. Today, just be an American, and be proud.
